This project is for a renovation and a two-story side extension to an existing two-story Tudor-style house in an inner-city suburb of Burlington.
For this project, this traditional Tudor house was designed by a famous Hamilton Architect, and the original portion strong-featured a steeply pitched roof with multiple overlapping, front-facing gables and a facade that's predominantly covered in brick but accented with half-timber framing.

The client – a growing family – required more recreation spaces and garages. They typically prefer continuing an almost castle-like appearance to them as well. SY Architect designed a U-shaped extension that created a private inner courtyard and solved the vehicle access problem.
We prominently placed brick and wood combination and rectangular tall windows with traditional panes that really play up the Medieval-style character with respect to existing heritage; The interaction between the existing and extension is further understood through an exposed breezeway, recycled brick, and new timber boards.

Despite following historic brick-and-timber materials, we located the extension on relatively high topography, where providing a panoramic view to fantastic backyard forest and overlooking view to the further Ontario lake and a beautiful Burlington-Hamilton city view on the hill edge especially during a sparkling night.
